Movement Development is a Basic Life Skill

Movement Development is a Basic Life Skill

Conrad Ho, 23 May 2011

Herbivores in the wild are confronted with the issue of life and death since they were born. It is said that if newborns cannot stand up and run in half and hour, they may attract the attention of predators, and therefore may loose their life. Therefore, the development of movement skills help to keep them alive.

Because modern human beings are usually born in hospitals or at home, newborns are not confronted with such danger. We may easily take our ability to move for granted. But if we live our life without moving, like a vegetable, there is not much meaning either. It is easy to understand that if one can move easily, the quality of life will be better. For the elderly and for those who are physically handicapped, this is very true.

Below are some feedbacks from a few participants of Conrad Ho’s Basic Life Skills (Movement Development) workshop on May 20-22 in Dalian.
A mother of a 12-year-old – I brought the balancing ball and trampoline home. Children like the balancing ball very much. When my daughter first began, she could not maintain her balance on the ball. Then, I let her stand there together with me – first we found the center of gravity, then we walked slowly with feet on the found, and we skipped. Then, she felt the balance. When she stepped up there again, she could stand on the ball! She was very amazed. How could that happen? It seemed that her sense of balance was improving. Now she practices the balancing ball every day with a sense of achievement!

A mother of an 8-year-old – The title of the workshop caught my eyes. At that time, my neck was in great tension everyday, even after massages. After the class, my neck was much more relaxed. In the last month, it didn’t have that problem again. I felt more alive! In this workshop, I experienced a lot. For example, when I headed the balloon, I felt tensions in my neck released. The activities were simple, but the effect was obvious.

A mother of a 9-year-old boy – I learnt how best educate my son. Instead of shouldering him on my back, just give enough effort to support him. After I went back home, he played on the trampoline and the balancing board. He loved then, and I felt they were good for improving his concentration when studying.

A counselor – After the class, I became more beautiful and self-confident. I became more balanced in the class. Teacher Conrad has influenced how I think about life. I felt that to learn from him was to learn how to manage myself. My friends told me my skins were shining, and I was more confident and willing to express myself. Now, my ability to focus and to balance has improved – especially my sense of balance. Most importantly, I felt energized and seldom felt tired afterwards.
