Feeling Better In New Lights

Feeling Better In New Lights

Amy Choi

I have been enjoying new lights at our Centre since we’ve changed our lightings from ordinary to full-spectrum fluorescent tubes. When I am doing office work or training, natural sunlight has always been my preference on a bright clear day. Thanks to the glass walls of our office building! When sunlight is not available, however, I have to switch on the lights. I had always felt a bit uncomfortable and disturbed under our ordinary fluorescent lights. The world looked paler, too, because these lights have no red spectrum.

I have known for a few years that florescent lights can be harmful to our health and may adversely affect our ability to learn. Their electromagnetic fields are not static but possess alternating current producing a magnetic field that easily passes through our body. Our brain, muscles and kidneys, tissues with high water content, are more susceptible to the effects of these frequencies than say, bones and fat of low water content. (See Carla Hannaford’s book Smart Moves, Why Learning Is Not All In Your Head (New Edition), p. 160-162 for researches and details on how they affect learning)

Now, under these new lights, the world looks redder and brighter and I feel more comfortable. You may also consider changing your company, school and home lightings to full spectrum lightings. They are much more expensive and close to impossible to find in Hong Kong. If you’re interested, email me and we may pool orders together to make bulk purchases from Europe economical. You can also search on the internet.

Here’re some ideas of what you can do to minimize the effects of electromagnetic fields in your environment:

l) Use less electricity whenever possible;
2) Drink more water, do Hook-ups frequently;
3) Leave a glass of water near a source of electromagnetic field, basically your electrical appliances; and
4) Do as many balances as possible to maintain or improve your state of well-being.
