Being Authentic Is Important In Promoting Kinesiology
Huang Pei (Beijing, China) July 7, 2014
I learned about kinesiology not very long times ago. I am not a talented student. Therefore, it seems to be a bit too hard for me to explain or promote such a magnificent school of knowledge within short paragraphs. Each time before we host a class, promotion and advertisement always give us a real headache. Kinesiology is so profound, and can be applied to so many aspects of life, that it just cannot be outlined easily. Every person, both those who aim at becoming professionals in kinesiology and those who run into kinesiology as a normal student, can find something that is suitable for them. This fact greatly boosts the difficulty of promoting kinesiology.
I am often amazed by discovering yet another merit of kinesiology, despite the fact that I have been bombarded with insights shared by my husband Feng Tianpeng, for years. I cannot imagine how much someone who is new to kinesiology can learn. If this is the case, what shall we do when they present their questions and doubts in front of us? This question bothered me for a long time, until a bottle of old wine inspired me.
A long time ago, I bought a book about wines (before I was pregnant, I used to drink a small glass of wine every night before sleep). The author illustrates a bottle of wine in a very elegant way. It sounds like this: “I sampled the wine, closed my eyes, and grasped some feeling — as if I was rambling in the vineyard of a winery; as if the smell of fresh grape and maiden’s sweat are mixing and filling up the medieval castle; as if I was hearing goblets bouncing and ringing, and the hosts and guests of the castle cheering and laughing.” Some of my friends and I could not forget this description. We dug the market up for this specific bottle. Once we finally got our hands on one, we opened it as soon as we could, decanted the liquid, tasted it and closed our eyes just like the author did. Seconds later, I opened my eyes, puzzled. I had another sip, and tasted very carefully. Then I opened my eyes again, saw my friends looking at each other all with confused face, I asked: “Did you hear anything or see anything? I feel it’s just average wine!” Hearing my confession, my friends let down their shoulder and said, “I thought I had to come up with some kinds of words to describe it. I’m glad you are telling the truth.”
Maybe people like us are too oridinary for elegant insights like the one the author had; however, people like us make up the majority of our society. I’m afraid that merely being elegant does not make a line convincing for oridinary people like us.
All of sudden, this experience enlightened me. Although promoting something means presenting the best side of it; over doing so also overwhelms our customer and could drive them into a state of criticism or doubt. Thus, for a person like me, lazy and not necessarily clever, the best I could do is to see kinesiology in my own perspective; feel it with my own heart. Then, I shall share what I saw and felt with my own words. My words might be biased, immature, or subjective; but they are authentic. They can help people grasp some feeling – something that resonates with their own experiences. Do you agree?
